May 2014 Blog Of The Month

Girl Behind The Blog: Addison Cain

May's BOTM is one of the very first blogs I actually started following. Back when My Gorgeous Chaos was just a dream in my head, I would read Vanity Talk, and chat to the founder Addison Cain in  our 3:30 PR Writing class. Needless to say, my permanent seat next to this beauty was the beginning of a friendship I am happy to say cultivated throughout the semester.

A recent grad like myself, Addison is both fun and fresh with her content and her candid nature is refreshing to read. Below you will find our interview and be sure to check out her site!

Where are you from and where do you live now?
I am originally from Northern Kentucky, near Cincinnati, but I’m currently living in Lexington, Kentucky.

What was the inspiration behind Vanity Talk? And how long have you been blogging?
Well, I’ve always been a bit of a beauty addict (weekly facials were a regular occurrence around age 12) and as I got older, I realized I had a lot of beauty opinions to share. Eventually, I figured my boyfriend and friends were sick of talking about products with me, so I created Vanity Talk as my creative outlet. Now, Vanity Talk has been around for about a year and a half, with much more to come!

How would you describe your blog to someone who hasn’t visited your site before?
Vanity Talk is a beauty blog where I discuss my latest beauty findings, from shampoo to facial cleanser. I’ve recently (within the past year or so) started incorporating more natural and organic products into my blog, but I still frequently discuss mainstream products as well. You can often find the occasional post on life, fashion and travel on my blog as well!

What’s your daily beauty routine?
Oh, goodness! Where to begin? Well, I believe beauty is all about balance. Like I said, I’ve recently started incorporating more organic products into my routine, but I also still appreciate some of the more unnatural products as well. So things don’t get lost in the shuffle, I’ll divide them into AM and PM.

AM Routine
1. Cleanse with Johnson’s Head-to-Toe Baby Wash
2. Tone with Dickinson’s Witch Hazel Pore Perfecting Toner, a floral hydrosol by The October Union or some other type of toner I’ve created using herbal or green tea
3. Moisturize my eye area with CeraVe Moisturizing Lotion
4. Apply Burt’s Bees Beeswax Lip Balm or eos Smooth Sphere Lip Balm in Lemon Drop

5. Apply makeup (in the summer, this typically means little more than concealer, eyeliner and mascara). My current makeup favorites are Ilia Nightfall Mascara, Revlon Colorstay Concealer and Merle Norman Age Defying Eyeliner in Coffee Bean.

PM Routine
1. Cleanse again with my beloved Johnson’s or Yes to Tomatoes Acne Control Gel Cleanser, depending on how my skin is feeling at the time.
2. Tone with with Evian Brumisateur (I know spray waters seem way pretentious, but I love them in the hot summer weather)
3. Moisturize my eye area with CeraVe Moisturizing Lotion
Wipe Noxzema Ultimate Clean Anti-Blemish Pads over any areas that are giving me trouble. If my skin seems clear, I skip this step.
4. Apply Burt’s Bees Beeswax Lip Balm
5. Sleep! I try to get at least seven hours a night, because I think it makes a huge difference in the way I look and feel.

Occasionally (about two to three times a week in the summer), I exfoliate using my Clarisonic Mia with cleanser or one of the other exfoliants I have on hand at the time. Osmia Organics Protein Exfoliating Mask is wonderful as a scrub powder and plain oatmeal always works too.

What are some of your favorite beauty products for summer?
I love lighter makeup looks in the summer and I often use products that are sheerer around this time of year. Right now, I love Burt’s Bees Lip Shimmers, Josie Maran Coconut Watercolor Cheek GelĂ©e and of course, fun polishes like Revlon Fearless or Essie E-Nuf is E-Nuf.
I remember while we were in class, you shared with me your love of branching out and writing for other outlets.

Where else can we check out your work?
I wrote an article on DIY Sheet Masks for Refinery29 and also, I wrote an article on engagement photo shoots for the latest issue of Kentucky Bride Magazine!

What’s been your most rewarding moment as a blogger?
I’ve had a few, but I am ecstatic when I share a great product or brand with my readers and they end up loving it as much as I do!

What’s your ultimate goal for Vanity Talk?
I would love to be able to turn my blog into my business one day, but for now, I am completely happy just being able to share new products and my thoughts with my readers.

Jack Daniels Honey + Lemonade

This post marks the launch of the Summer Cocktail Series here on Gorgeous Chaos {get excited}. To me, the months of summer are best spent next to the pool with a cocktail in hand so I have compiled some of my favorite recipes, and some that are new to me, and will be presenting them to ya'll until the end of August. First up, is this my spin on an "adult lemonade."

I will admit that I have never been much of a whiskey drinker, until now. Jack Daniels Honey is the perfect base for this cocktail! And these adorable lemon stirrers are the perfect touch to "styling" your glass {I love fancy things}. This recipe is simple to make and I know that you'll love it as much as I do. Drink up ;]

INGREDIENTS
Ice
1 part Jack Daniels Honey
3 parts Lemonade {any brand works}

Mix and Enjoy!

{ both the lemon stirrers and the mason jar were purchased via Williams Sonoma}

Hometown Glory

Hometowns. Everyone has one. Maybe you were born and breed in the same city, or perhaps, like me, you were raised a little here and a little there...but no matter where your roots are, we all have that place that always fits us, no matter how long it's been since our last visit. I guess that's why they call it home.

Lately I've stumbled upon items that reflect and embody the beauty in reppin' where you're from and I just wanted to share them with you! Enjoy!

The ladies over at All The Wire offer these "state of mind" necklace's so you can always keep your  home near to your heart. And believe it or not, three of the states I've called home are stenciled in the picture above. Crazy right! Now you see why I can't sit still.

Anyways head over to their site to check out all their amazing jewelry. The link is HERE.

Outline The Sky is one of my newest brand discoveries! This company literally outlines the skyline of different US cities and then print them on to tees (below), tanks (above), hats, etc. I love this idea!

The various apparel items are available in different colors and styles so be sure to check them out HERE

The state rings are crafted from the Etsy shop Love Personalized and they are the perfect conclusion to this post. Each ring is completely custom for two reason. One, you, of course pick your state, and then you tell them which city you're from, and that's where the heart goes. Perfection. Be sure to check them out HERE.

Happy Tuesday ya'll!

Coffee Talk: Cleaning Out My Closet

This week, Monday's annual Coffee Talk post begins with a weird fact about myself: I clean when I'm stressed out. I will admit that typically this anxiousness manifests itself into me eating everything I can get my hands on, but every now and then my "nervous tick" begins and ends with me altering my environment. I light candles, do laundry that has been piling up, or I buy fresh flowers to brighten up my room; basically do anything that evokes change to my living space. I literally "clean out my closet." This tick, though it may be a bit strange, almost always provides good perspective and it's what prompted today's post.

The truth is I need to clean out more than just my closet. And last night, as I was going through my things I realized that summer is the perfect time for some "me cleaning." In my world, that consists of less procrastination and more personal reflection. Less time on my cell phone and more time with my friends.

This cleaning process also got me thinking about what life would be like if I didn't procrastinate. If I kept the promises I made to myself and actually made a concrete decision or completed a task I'd been putting off (the current of which is starting my graduation thank you notes). What would this feel like. Probably a lot less stress if I'm being honest, and I'm sure all of you can relate.

So as summer really starts to set in, and we all embark on the journeys to come, take some time today and do some cleaning of your own. Finish a task you've been putting off or met with a friend you've been neglecting. Do something good for yourself, and don't forget to let me know how it goes.

Happy Monday!

Coffee Talk: Becoming An Alumni

Well ya'll I apologize for my week long hiatus, but I was busy graduating! Yes, I am officially an alumni of the University of Kentucky. CRAZY!

If I'm being honest it all doesn't feel real to me yet. Graduation is one of those things in life that snuck up on me and suddenly became my reality. And now I'm bombarded almost daily with questions like  "what are you going to do next" and "how does it feel", and I be lying if I said that I knew the answer to any of them. I don't have a clue what I'm doing....but as crazy as it sounds, I know that this is the time for me to be in this place. I usually always have a plan or a roadmap and this is the first time in my life that I have nothing, but I'm okay with that. I guess you could call it the Gorgeous Chaos in me.

And while becoming and alumni of the greatest college institution in the nation has been and might continue to be one of the scariest experiences of my life, I know I'll be better for the ride.

It is with this belief that I want to open up to all of my fellow May 2014 graduates. How does it feel? To those of you who have landed jobs already congrats! To those of you that are still searching like me, don't worry! Our journeys aren't meant to be the same!

Feel free to share with me! I would love to hear from ya'll

Spice Up Your Mint Julep

Happy Saturday to all my gorgeous readers! In case you haven't heard, its Derby Day here in the bluegrass. For as long as I can remember, The Kentucky Derby has been about big hats, placing bets, and having a great time with your friends and family at the track. Lately however, my fascination about this first Saturday in May has centered around the official drink of the Derby, the Mint Julep.

Made using Makers Mark and mint, this cocktail continues to be the centerpiece both at Churchill Downs and at every Derby party for miles around. So today I decided to put together a post of some of my favorite Mint Julep recipes; some traditional, and others that put their own spin on things!

the traditional Mint Julep recipe

this next little beauty is called a Pomegranate Cranberry Mint Julep which sounds so refreshing to me, especially as the weather gets warmer. The recipe can be found over at Fantastic Eats

The final spin thats sure to spice up your Mint Julep is this beautiful Blackberry Mint Julep. The recipe can be found over at Miss in the Kitchen.

And with that, I am off in search of a Mint Julep of my own! I hope ya'll enjoy this beautiful day!

Mother Knows Best

Mother Knows Best; it's such a funny phrase to me when I sit back and think about my relationship with my mother. You see, for the past couple of years, the two of us have bantered back and forth about who is right in what circumstances. At the end of each of these encounters, she always jokes that I think I know everything, while I have always believed the real issue is that she thinks she knows everything and that I know nothing; typical. We usually end up laughing about whatever we're discussing, but it always inevitably comes back to "I'm the mom, and mother knows best."  In fact I'm sure the rest of you can relate to the power and reverence that is packed inside those three little words.

And while I will admit that the initial inspiration behind that phrase comes from one of my favorite Disney movies Frozen, with Mother's Day right around the corner, I thought it would be fun to pay homage to my mom and all the things I am now not afraid to admit she was right about.

Mother Knew Best About....
- making the most of my college years
- keeping my faith above everything else
- making judgement calls {when people show you who they are, believe them}
- staying happy {never let anyone steal your joy}
- writing thank you notes
- tight clothing and high heels {make sure you can walk. make sure you can breathe}

I would love to hear about your "mother knows best" memories so feel free to share them below!
I've also linked "Mother Knows Best" from Frozen for your entertainment ;]

Have a great day ya'll!
